Eat, Drink and Be Scary: How to Celebrate Halloween in South Africa

Halloween is almost here and, while it may be one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the Unites States, many South Africans are still warming up to the spooky festivities. Which is why we wanted to share some easy and exciting ideas to get you into the spirit of things! Because not every neighborhood will plan a trick or treat event, hosting your own party is probably your best bet at celebrating this wickedly awesome occasion. Gather your guests – it’s time to eat, drink and be scary!

The décor
Décor is first on our list because we believe it can either make or break the entire celebration. In addition to setting the scene, it plays a big role in getting any ambivalent guests to embrace the Halloween spirit. While you can pick up some goodies from the store, it’ll be more effective to create your own décor from scratch. Not to worry though, there are plenty easy DIY ideas to try! The eats
Make sure you serve some ghoulishly delightful snacks to keep the trembling tummies at bay. A few favourites that will work particularly well include devilled eggs, candy apples and pumpkin pies. You may also consider creating unique names for each dish, such as “Witch Fingers Pretzels”, “Bloody Good Cheesecake” or “Jack-O’-Lantern Chips and Dip”.
At Kerrygold, it’s scary how much we love dairy. Which is why we have developed a variety of delicious recipes for you to try this Halloween – all made using our premium quality butter. From “Octopots” and “Sausage Mummies” for starters to “Ghost Cupcakes” for dessert – we’ve got your menu covered.
-
The drinks
… Because no party is complete without some refreshments. The great thing about Halloween is that it lends itself to all sorts of creative drink names like “Sweet Poison” or “Witch’s Brew”. We recommend having a signature Halloween cocktail, which will not only add to the fun factor but also serve as a conversation starter. The teetotallers will also be spoilt for choice with these non-alcoholic Halloween drinks.

The entertainment
A light-hearted themed activity is sure to break the ice and take your party from good to unBOOlievable! For example, you could have a photo booth with Halloween-themed props or the unique skeleton backdrop shown below.
You could even create a creepy Halloween ‘feel box’ for guests to experiment with whilst blindfolded – fill it with eyeballs (peeled grapes), brains (damp course sponge), worms (cold cooked spaghetti), etc. Of course, you could also ask your guests to dress up in costumes and award prizes for the best dressed.
Here are some more spooktacular ways to celebrate Halloween in South Africa:
- Have a scary movie marathon
- Hold a Halloween treasure hunt in your own backyard
- Create some Halloween crafts, whether to give away as gifts or just for fun
- Do some Halloween baking and share your creations with family and friends
- Prepare trick-or-treat goodie bags filled with sweet treats and distribute them to children in need, including those at your local orphanage or children’s home
