6 Delicious Desserts You Can Make on the Braai

When we hear the word ‘braai’, sizzling boerewors, tender steaks, and succulent lamb chops often come to mind, but some of the best desserts can actually be made on the braai too! Here are six delicious braai desserts to try this National Braai Day.

This twist on an old classic is incredibly tasty and super easy to prepare. All you need is a no. 10 flat-bottomed potjie pot, great quality ingredients, and some fiery hot coals. Grilled Fruit Kebabs
These grilled fruit kebabs are wonderful cooked on the gentle embers of a braai. They’re ready in five simple steps, so make them if you’re pressed for time. For a really special treat, serve them alongside an indulgent chocolate fondue. Simply melt your favourite chocolate with a couple of spoons of cream in a small pan and stir until smooth.

Sweet Braaibroodjies
Everybody loves a good braaibroodjie, so these sweet variations are sure to be a real crowd-pleaser.
You will need:
- 8 slices bread
- 50g Kerrygold Pure Irish Unsalted Butter
- 1 tin pie apple slices
- 5ml cinnamon
- 60ml castor sugar
What to do:
- Spread the butter onto each slice of bread.
- Place four slices of bread, butter side down, on a braai grid.
- Drain any juice off the apples and discard. Divide the apple pieces evenly between the slices of bread and arrange them neatly.
- Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a bowl and sprinkle liberally over the apples.
- Place the other slice of bread on top (butter side up).
- Close the grid and braai for a few minutes each side over low coals. Keep a close eye on the braaibroodjies, making sure the bread doesn’t burn by turning them regularly.

Hot Braai Trifle with Amarula Custard
Out to impress your guests this Braai Day? Then this is definitely the dessert to serve. The recipe below calls for store-bought Madeira loaf, but if you have some time on your hands, our Madeira cake is the one to beat.
You will need:
- 1 small store-bought Madeira loaf
- 100g Kerrygold Pure Irish Unsalted Butter
- 250g strawberries (washed, hulled and halved) or other berries
- 2x 50g tubes of Rolo chocolate or 100g chocolate broken into pieces
- 50ml Amarula
- 500ml custard
What to do:
- Cut the Madeira loaf into rough 2cm squares.
- Place a flat-bottomed cast-iron pot over medium coals, and add the butter to the pot.
- Once the butter is hot, add the cake squares and cook until starting to turn golden. Turn them often to get even cooking on all sides.
- Remove the pot from the heat and add in the strawberries and the Rolos. Set aside for a few minutes for the chocolate to melt and the strawberries to release their juices.
- Meanwhile, add Amarula to your custard (if desired) and serve.

Grilled Cherry Crisp

This grilled cherry crisp is bursting with sweet cherries and a crunchy oat topping. Everything about this dessert is quick and easy – it’s even prepared in a disposable foil pan so you can clean up in a snap. Made with Kerrygold butter, the oat topping bakes slowly on the braai and ends up tasting like a South African ‘crunchie’.
