Top Cake Trends to Try for Your Next Big Celebration

If there’s one thing that every celebration needs, it’s cake! As the ever-wise Julia Child once said, “A party without a cake is just a meeting”. So whether you have a birthday, anniversary, wedding or other special occasion coming up, a delicious cake is definitely the dessert to serve. Here are six top cake trends that will go down a real treat at your next big celebration.

Almost Dressed Cakes

Almost dressed cakes are similar to the popular ‘naked cakes’ which have been doing the rounds at weddings for a while now. Instead of having very little to no frosting, this alternative has just enough icing to see some of the cake beneath. Almost dressed cakes are certainly neater, and they’re sure to be more delicious with the addition of a good buttercream made with Kerrygold butter! The decorations also err on the side of minimalism, with edible flowers and real foliage being a popular choice.

Upside Down Cakes

Upside down cakes may seem like something straight from mum’s old recipe books, but this classic cake is definitely making a comeback. Traditionally made with pineapple, modern variations are using fruity alternatives and flavour combinations. One of our favourites is this Rhubarb Upside Down Cake made with fresh, tart rhubarb. Rhubarb is also becoming a trendy choice in itself, thanks to the rise in popularity of retro flavours reminiscent of comforting, childhood foods.

This is one of our absolute favourite trends! Cakes with beautiful calligraphy are just that much more special. They are wonderful for weddings, with many couples choosing to add their vows or a romantic quote to the cake. This trend can however be extended to other celebrations, such as a sweet message on a birthday cake or Bible verse on a christening cake. Here are some tips on how to create the look.

Spatula Painted Cakes

Spatula painted cakes are also on the rise. Not dissimilar to the brushstroke cakes that came on the scene in a big way back in 2017, these cakes can be described as edible works of art. They are made by applying buttercream to the cake in small dabs and strokes using a spatula. The end result can be likened to that of a textured oil painting, which is being very well received by the world’s cake decorating industry.
