South African Foodie Events to Attend This Summer


From food festivals to farmers’ markets, South African foodies will be spoilt for choice on where to get their food fix this summer. While there are a number of fabulous food and drink events happening around the country all season long, we’ve gone in search of some real gems. So, without further ado, here they are: our selection of local, must-visit foodie events!

  1. Summer is For Stellenbosch Street Soirees

When: 18:00 to 20:00 on 12 December 2018 | 16 & 30 January 2019 | 13 & 27 February 2019

Where: Drostdy Street, Stellenbosch

Experience traffic-stopping entertainment, sizzling street food and superb vintage wines at the ever-popular Stellenbosch Street Soirees presented by the Stellenbosch Wine Routes. Each soiree affords foodies the opportunity to sample delicious food and wine from a selection of local cellars and street fare caterers whilst enjoying some live music.   1. Outeniqua Family Market

When: Every Saturday from 08:00 to 14:00

Where: Opposite the Garden Route Mall, George

The Outeniqua Family Market promises a festive atmosphere filled with mouth-watering aromas from varied food stalls. There are more than 150 food and craft stalls to choose from, so you can shop up a storm as well. There are plenty activities to keep the kids busy and you can even take your furry friends along, too! Visit the market’s website to see what’s on offer.

  1. Donkin Street Festival

When: 10:00 to 15:00 on 30 December 2018, 27 January & 24 February 2019 | 20:00 – 01:00 on 31 December 2018 | 16:00 – 21:00 on 23 February 2019

Where: Constitution Street, Port Elizabeth

Held in the creative hub of Port Elizabeth, the Donkin Street Festival gives locals the opportunity to savour delicious artisanal food whilst appreciating the work of local artists and musicians. The event boasts a variety of vendors, from confectioners and chocolatiers to henna artists and screen printers. Follow the event on Facebook to find out more.

  1. The Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market

When: 6:30 to 13:00 on 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 December 2018 |  8:00 to 13:00 on 15 & 16 December 2018

Where: Lot 457, Mr551, Shongweni

The Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market hosts over 150 stalls, more than half of which offer delectable food and outstanding fresh produce. It gets off to an early start, but you’ll be rewarded with a bountiful breakfast and top-quality coffee. During December, the market will host a series of Christmas extravaganzas where you can also spoil yourself and loved ones to locally handcrafted gifts and décor.

  1. Haenertsburg & Magoebaskloof Berry Festival

When: 2 & 3 February 2019

Where: Haenertsburg, Limpopo

The Berry Festival promises loads of family-friendly activities, including the chance to pick your own berries at participating farms. The festival also includes a village market where you can stock up on fresh farm produce and homemade delights, as well as a host of participating restaurants where you can sit down for a bite to eat.   1. The Neighbourgoods Market – JHB & CPT

When: Every Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00

Where: 73 Juta Street, Johannesburg | 373 – 375 Albert Road, Woodstock, Cape Town

The Neighbourgoods Market takes place on a weekly basis in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The terrific array of speciality foods and goods on offer make this market an essential showcase of each city’s finest merchants, designers and producers. Inspired by each city’s unique energy, the market offers a real sense of community and provides a fantastic spot to meet up with family and friends.

  1. Clarens Craft Beer Festival

When: 12:00 to 20:00 on 22 February 2019 | 10:00 to 19:00 on 23 February 2019

Where: Clarens Village Town Square

Sip on the country’s best craft beer while you feast on gourmet food at the annual Clarens Craft Beer Festival which features 24 breweries and a selection of fabulous food stalls.
