Spreading Love to the Elderly, One Cupcake at a Time

Social media users recently came together with Kerrygold South Africa to take their love for the elderly off-line. After mobilising users through an online cupcake voting contest, the dairy brand donated servings of the winning cupcake to over 400 elderlies at the Algoa Bay Council for the Aged (ABCA) in Port Elizabeth on Valentine’s Day.
Since the beginning of February, Kerrygold South Africa, marketed on behalf of Ornua Africa, shared a series of updates across their social media pages, informing users of the campaign which sought to spread the love on Valentine’s Day.
The campaign worked by encouraging users to cast a vote for their favourite out of three differently designed cupcakes – the winner of which would then be donated to the elderly men and women residing at ABCA’s Buffelsfontein Village.
The designs included colourful mini hearts in keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme, a Friesian cow face to symbolise the Kerrygold brand and a gold coin with green glitter to pay homage to the brand’s Irish roots.
“One of Ornua’s core values is sincerity and honesty – and building relationships is core to these values,” said Ornua Africa’s General Manager, Bruce Denyer.
“This campaign was all about just that – building long-lasting relationships with our community and appreciating the elderly in our city.”
Coming in at over 400 votes, the cupcake with the heart design proved to be the favourite amongst social media users. Local cake design studio, House of Bakes, was then tasked with baking all 450 of the required cupcakes before the handover, which took place on Valentine’s Day morning at the ABCA Hall. Served alongside some refreshments, the cupcakes were then handed over amidst much excitement.
“Our residents showed their appreciation by dressing up in red for the occasion,” said ABCA’s Residential Services Manager, Marie Hubert.
“We are honoured that Kerrygold chose us a beneficiary and are very grateful for the fabulous morning of coffee and cupcakes.”
Ornua Africa’s Marketing Manager, Jacqui Brown, said that the honour was all theirs.
“Seeing the smiles on faces, sharing a cupcake, a cup of tea and stories with the folk from ABCA was such an honour – a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and an even better way to spoil some special people.”
