Valuable Cooking Tips from Mom

During the month of May we launched our Cooking with Mom Instagram competition which required our fans to share what the most valuable cooking tips are that their mom taught them.

The entries received were so wonderful we felt we just had to share them with you. Have a look at some of the things our fans had to say about what valuable cooking tips their mom taught them while growing up:

Anne Botes

“My mom cooked a made-from-scratch dinner for the family almost every day while I was growing up. I’m sure she didn’t always feel like cooking, and I’m sure at the time we didn’t appreciate her efforts nearly as much as we should have. Now as an adult, I’m grateful to her for demonstrating that cooking is a labour of love. It’s not always fun, fancy or romantic – in fact, it’s usually not any of those things. Instead, it’s a daily commitment you make because it’s important, and you want to care for those you love.”

Lee Ann Peters Pillay

“Never substitute butter with margarine. Butter might be more expensive but the taste in unbeatable. She always said rather make half your quantity to save costs rather than changing the quality of the product.”

Rehana Seedat

“I learned that the second batch of pancakes will always be better than the first as the griddle heats up (so always let your sibling have the first batch) and that anything can be cured with homemade chicken soup. From a very young age, my mom also taught me the value of cooking for people you love. Every Mother’s Day, I would wake up early and turn our house into a brunch restaurant, complete with hand written menus, flowers, and full table settings. It always made my mom so happy and it was something I looked forward to all year. To this day, we carry on the tradition by cooking dinner together for the rest of our family almost every Sunday.”

Cirsten

“My mom taught me to put a few dried bay leaves in the grocery draws to prevent insects from eating the food. She also told me if you get burnt in the kitchen quickly grab some cold butter to spread over the burn.”

Leigh-Anne Swart

“My mum taught me to make sure you have all the ingredients before you start cooking and that your eggs must be at room temperature.”

Cindy Hornsby

“My mom taught me how to do each step while planning the next, so as to minimise time wastage and maximise efficiency! She also taught me how to work together and anticipate each other in the kitchen; we worked like a beautiful ballet, sometimes never needing a word said. I miss those days so much.”

Tracy

“My mom taught me to clean up as u cook, wash up and put away while the food is on the go, it just makes life so much easier.”

Shaleen Ramdhanee

“My mum always told me that whenever u add extra salt always add one potato grated or add a tomato as they absorb the salt.”

JaxK

“The most valuable lesson mom taught me, always make enough for leftovers.”

Celeste Dias

“Add butter to mash potatoes before milk or cream for them to be creamy and lump free.”

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Cooking with Mom competition, we wish we could have included all of your comments as they were all so special and reinforced how much influence a mom has on their children and the valuable life lessons they teach us.
