8 Eggstatic Ways to Spend Time Together as a Family
April is a very family-orientated time – with Easter, school end of term and all the public holidays there is plenty of opportunities to spend time together as a family.
But knowing what you want to do with that time is a different story altogether!
Tired of going to the movies or visiting the mall? These 8 ‘eggstatic’ ways to spend time together as a family are sure to break the norm and make for some ‘eggcellent’ memories.
1. Family Night
In the same way that you love to host that monthly game night with your friends, why not thinking about hosting a weekly family night with your household?
With our busy lives we tend to live in the 9-5 rhythm: wake up, head to work/school, get home, have dinner and prepare for the next workday. We get so used to our daily schedules that we forget to have fun in-between.
Play some board games, watch a movie or just share stories with one another! It’s great to break the routine and spend some time with the family – sometimes this is exactly what is needed to unwind too.
No family night would be complete without some appropriate snacks like this deliciously simple American-style pizza.
2. Family Fitness
Keeping healthy is a family effort and this is not just about eating healthy foods. Exercise is important but can become tedious when you’re left to fight the fitness battle on your own.
But exercising as a family can be great fun!
Find a sporting activity that you can enjoy together as a family – whether you are taking a jog or cycle around the neighbourhood, playing soccer in the park or heading out for a fun hike on the weekend, the important part is that you are bonding and staying healthy. Win-win!
3. Community Service
Are you trying to teach your children responsibility, accountability and the importance of helping others?
What better way to instil these values than to engage in some community service!
There’s always plenty of help needed at the local SPCA or you can always join in on a beach cleanup. Both are super fun ways to spend time together as a family and to help the community.
4. Catch up with Chores
As the old adage goes “many hands make light work”!
Every household has its fair share of chores to do but a little reward at the end always makes working through the chores more worthwhile.
Let the kids choose what they would like to do after completing their chores and they will work harder, and quicker, to finish them up.
Whether you’re going out for ice cream or going out for dinner, the family will enjoy doing some chores together and will also reap the benefits together in some well-earned family time.
5. Bake something Delicious
We know that the kids love eating baked treats as much as we love baking!
But baking in the kitchen on your own is no fun – sometimes it’s nice to have some company and some extra hands to do the dishes.
Sit down with your favourite recipe book and choose a yummy recipe to bake together. The kids will love the process and have some great fun spending time together while learning a new skill.
We recommend some delicious Butter Whirls.
6. Family Reading Hour
With Netflix, YouTube, Spotify and the likes it can be challenging to head back to the good old fashioned paperback. Instead of watching series or listening to music this evening, why not try out some old fashioned reading?
Let the children choose a book they’d like to read and have a family reading session for an hour. You can even speak about the books you’re reading after reading hour is complete and share your thoughts with one another!
Once reading hour becomes a routine, you can even host your very own ‘family book club’.
7. Plan a Monthly Outing
Have you ever visited your local museum? What about the aquarium? Any heritage sites nearby?
There is plenty to do around your town, all you need do is decide where you would like to go first.
An easy way to decide would be for each family member to write down ideas on pieces of paper and toss them into a jar. Pick a piece of paper from the jar and use that idea as your monthly outing!
This way, every family member gets to contribute and also enjoy a family outing.
8. Social Media Shenanigans
Do you have teenagers? Teens are very into social media from taking photos with cute and quirky Instagram filters to recording TikTok videos that they can share with their friends.
There is never a dull moment when it comes to social media. Have you ever tried joining the social media movement? You might be surprised how much fun the experience can be.
Head outside with your teens, take some selfies, and try some silly filters! They are sure to appreciate the effort and, who knows, you might even enjoy social media yourself.
